V-SHAPE Compact: Wet or dry – the decision is yours!
The units of the newly developed V-SHAPE Compact family are available as fluid cooler, condenser and gas cooler and offer maximum capacity on a remarkably small footprint already when operated in dry mode. The optional HydroPad humidification pad for adiabatic pre-cooling allows for operating refrigerating plants more efficiently, thereby saving money – no water treatment, no intense maintenance works and no wetting of the coil required. The available Güntner Hydro Management decides continuously whether applying water or increasing the fan speed is more cost-effective.

The V-SHAPE Compact cooler: In a class of its own
The new V-SHAPE Compact units round off the product portfolio of the V-SHAPE families at the lower end with regard to capacity. Each heat exchanger is specifically designed for the fluid HFC, CO2 or water/glycol mixture. The core tube diameters and materials, in combination with the fin geometries, provide the best possible combination of maximum capacity and minimum tube volume. Operated with the optional adiabatic HydroPad pre-cooling system and the wide range of accessories, the V-SHAPE Compact leaves nothing to be desired in its performance category!
Technical equipment of the V-SHAPE Compact cooler
The V-SHAPE Compact coolers are equipped with retractable crane lugs and allow for particularly easy installation and quick mounting. The solid units with their compact casings made of powder-coated, galvanised steel are extensively tested for stability; they are, for instance, subjected to lifting tests to assess the torsional stiffness and to load tests to determine the snow load and the resistance of structures to earthquakes. The capacity ranges from 13 kW up to several hundred kW; this means that CO2 units operated in dry mode can achieve capacities of up to 560 kW. Speaking of CO2: The heat exchangers optimised for this refrigerant are designed for an operating pressure of up to 120 bar as a standard!
High-capacity fans, suitable control concepts
Up to four fans are available in AC or EC technology with a diameter of either 630 mm or 800 mm. It goes without saying that all of the fans meet the requirements stipulated by the ErP Directive. It does not matter which fan type you opt for:
We offer the suitable control concept including the intelligent Güntner Hydro Management GHMpad that always choses the most cost-efficient mode of operation and, in wetted operation, always applies only as much water as can evaporate under the respective conditions.
Some fan types can also be controlled via voltage (0 – 10 V) or current signal (4 – 20 mA).
Increased efficiency and capacity resulting from the adiabatic HydroPad pre-cooling System
The optional adiabatic HydroPad pre-cooling system offers substantial savings.
On the one hand, the wetting system can increase the capacity of the unit allowing you to operate smaller units with a reduced footprint without undermining the given capacity requirements.
And on the other hand, this option allows for operating all the refrigerating plants more efficiently, thereby saving money.
Adiabatic HydroPad pre-cooling system: One system, many benefits
The adiabatic HydroPad pre-cooling system offers you a sort of all-round carefree package:
Using the humidification pad, water treatment is not required – simply connect to the supply, that's it! Only fresh water is applied, there is no recirculation and thus no vapour and no aerosol output.
The pad also offers the advantage of being free of maintenance.
The available Güntner Hydro Management GHMpad monitors operating states for the
best adjustment between fan speed and humidification of the pad. In dry operation, the GHMpad ensures the regular drain of the unit and of the supply for hygiene reasons.
Expanded zone for transcritical CO2 plants by using gas coolers with HydroPad
Let's head southwards! This is one way of describing the possible applications of the newly developed V-SHAPE Compact as gas cooler with HydroPad as it pushes the previous border for transcritical CO2 plants, often referred to as "CO2 equator", far beyond the previously valid geographic boundaries. Until recently, transcritical CO2 installations were interesting from an economic point of view only for regions north of the Alps. The limitations of use depend on the average annual temperature of the respective location. The high temperature periods in the Mediterranean area resulted in excessively long transcritical operating times that had a negative effect on the plant's efficiency.
Gas cooler with HydroPad: Extending the subcritical operation period
The V-SHAPE Compact gas cooler with HydroPad system now offers THE solution to push the CO2 equator southwards:
The adiabatic pre-cooling of the ambient inlet air significantly reduces the plant's transcritical operating times.
Especially in areas where high temperatures and, at the same time, low humidity prevails, the "adiabatic potential" is huge!
Example calculation for the city of Madrid
The above diagram depicts the temperatures over the course of a year for Madrid. Based on the assumption that a CO2 booster system is operated transcritically from an ambient temperature of approx. 23 °C and is equipped with a conventional dry cooler, the transcritical operating hours are approx. 1,920 h/a in total. If, however, the ambient inlet air is pre-cooled during these approx. 1,920 h/a before it passes through the heat exchanger, then we have only approx. 300 h/a with temperatures ≥ 23 °C and thus only approx. 300 h/a of transcritical operation of the CO2 booster system. The economically efficient use of this plant at such a location is therefore guaranteed!

A wealth of Güntner’s expertise has gone into China’s first transcritical CO2 plant, which provides reliable refrigeration for Metro’s new Cash & Carry market in Beijing Li Shui Qiao. Peak summertime temperatures that almost reach the 40 °C/104 °F mark are the reason for using this efficient technology. An effective gas cooler solution by Güntner has been installed: A flatbed gas cooler in dry cooling mode combined with a V-SHAPE gas cooler in optional adiabatic cooling mode for summer. Thanks to the adiabatic system, the temperature of the air entering the coil is significantly lower. Hence, the CO2 outlet temperature can be much lower, improving the system’s COP by an average of 25 % during the summer months and by even up to 50 % at extreme ambient conditions with a dry bulb temperature of 40 °C/104 °F and a relative humidity of 35 %.
